H.I.S.D. (Hueston Independent Spit District) was born in 2005 through the collaboration of eight artists of varying mediums wanting to introduce a refreshing perspective to the sound and visual aesthetic of hip hop culture, classic soul music, poetry, visual art, fashion, and photography. Mutual respect and appreciation for the cultural significance and influence achieved by creatively bridging these art forms, brought Savvi (hip hop artist/entrepreneur), Equality (poet/writer/emcee/architect/visual artist), LdaVoice (emcee), Lenoge (emcee), King Midas (producer), Soul One (producer/DJ/radio personality), E-Classic (producer), and Jason ‘Flash Gordon Parks’ Woods (photographer/DJ), together to form H.I.S.D via the Peace Uv Mine Entertainment Group (http://www.myspace.com/peaceuvmine).
2001 – 2003
After attending Booker T. Washington High School in Houston and linking up while attending and graduating from Prairie View A & M University, Savvi and Equality, began making names for themselves as two of the top hip hop and poetry artists, respectively in the greater Hueston area. Their popularity continued to grow as the two joined forces to form Blak Embassy, who became known for pioneering a unique blend of poetry and hip hop, originating from Hueston. It was only a matter of time when Savvi and Equality would come to recognize that ‘their’ audience was being overlooked by the entertainment industry in general, hence Peace Uv Mine Entertainment Group was founded by J. ‘Savvi’ Fowler with the intentions of creating a platform for the exposure of progressive artistry.
2004
In the fall of 2004, Savvi (http://www.peaceuvmine.com/savvi/epk) released his first recording, “Hueston Chronicles || Fixtape” to critical acclaim on the local and regional hip hop scene. This project took a non-traditional approach in mixtape formatting, by being composed as a full fledged conceptual studio album. The Hueston Chronicles garnered Savvi a ‘Best Independent Hip Hop Artist’ nomination (Houston Press 2005), and a new loyal following in his region and beyond. At the same time, 90 miles outside of Hueston on the campus of Lamar University in Beaumont, TX, another movement was brewing in the name of Daily Supplement http://www.myspace.com/dailysupplement). The vocal stylings of emcee LdaVoice and the jazz influenced hip hop soundscape crafted by producer King Midas provided a refreshing twist on Texas hip hop
2005
2005 marked a great year for Equality and Jason ‘Flash Gordon Parks’ Woods, as they combined their creative talents to make a significant contribution to Art & Literature in the African-American Community. Together they created ‘The Beautiful Side of Ugly’ (http://beautifulsideofugly.com), a self published (Soular Renaissance) masterful collection of photographic images and poignant poetic words that have not been seen in this generation of thinkers and poets.
While ‘The Beautiful Side of Ugly’ was gaining momentum in the literary circuit, through a mutual associate, Savvi and Daily Supplement were introduced to each others music. After several chance meetings with LdaVoice and King Midas, what began as a plan to collaborate on a few songs, eventually evolved into an ongoing musical bond that had to be put into a greater and more formal context. In September of 2005, Daily Supplement joined the Peace Uv Mine Entertainment family. Shortly thereafter, Lenoge (http://www.myspace.com/lenoge), Hueston hip hop scene staple DJ and producer Soul One of the legendary ‘Late Nite Snax’ radio show, and up and coming producer E-Classic (http://www.myspace.com/eclassic) joined the collective, birthing the Hueston Independent Spit/Soul/Style/Slang/Sound District aka H.I.S.D. This diverse collective of artists hailing from various backgrounds, not to mention eight college degrees, shared a genuine passion for making quality music that entertains and feeds the soul.
2006
H.I.S.D. is preparing the release its debut project “The District” on Peace Uv Mine Entertainment and enter the consciousness of hip hop and soul music listeners world wide.
